According to the reading and my analysis, it was not George’s fault that he became poor. The reason of making him poor was his bad luck because no one wants to be poor in this world, include George. No matter how smart the people, without a good opportunity or good luck, he/she also gets poor. Just like at the beginning of losing his job. He stated “One day my English lessons ceased abruptly. The weather was getting hot and one of my pupils, feeling too lazy to go on with his lessons, dismissed me. The other disappeared from his lodgings without notice, owing me twelve francs. I was left with only thirty centimes and nothing to eat or smoke.” (P21 Chapter IV) In this situation, it is very obvious that George was educated and wanted to continue his job. He shouldn’t be poor because of his education level. However, his students didn’t want to work hard and continue to go to George’s class. Even though one student left without saying a word to George, and didn’t pay for George’s salary. What could George do with this bad situation? He couldn’t do anything to save his job. Although he was out of work, he still continued to find a job by various ways. For instance, “Ten days later we made another visit to the office of the secret society, taking care to bring a parcel that looked like washing. And the secret society had vanished! The woman in the laundry knew nothing……” (P50) George had a job appointment to the secret society, and successfully passed the interview. He went home and waited for the notice from the secret society. Nevertheless, the secret society tricked him. Even he also paid five francs; he still couldn’t get a job. Plus, by the description of “look like washing”, we can see clearly that George took the job seriously. He couldn’t get this job and also a victim. Above all, the reason of getting poor was not George’s fault because he was not lazy to get a job. In the contrary, he looked for job actively. Hence, George got poor just because of his misfortune.
